End of the Spear

'End of the Spear' features some intensely violent scenes, but this thought-provoking movie never falters in emphasizing the power of forgiveness."--Betty Jo Tucker, Reeltalk Movie Reviews This true story takes place deep in the heart of the jungles of Ecuador, along the Amazon River basin. The Waodani Indians are murdering each other to the point of near-extinction. Tribal conflicts (internal and external) have led to a staggering 60 percent mortality rate and the average Waodani male lives to be just over 30 years old. In response, the Ecuadorian government plans to send in troops to stop the killings and "reclaim" the land, essentially wiping out the Waodani. It's the early 1950s and Nate Saint, along with four other young American Christian missionaries, sense the urgency of this crisis and set out to befriend the Waodani people. Nate establishes contact with the remote tribe. Then on Jan 3, 1956 after weeks of what seems to be a progressing relationship, Nate and his friends, Jim Elliot, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming and Ed McCully, land the plane on a sandbar and make face-to-face contact with the Waodani. Five days later they lay dead in the Curaray River, speared to death. The story doesn't end there, though. Narracted by Nate's son, Steve, End of the Spear dramatically shows how that tragic day forever changes the lives of both the missionary families and the Waodani in a remarkable testimony of forgiveness and God's redemptive power. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose” Jim Elliott4.
Beyond The Gates of Splendor

This is the full-story in documentary style that the End of the Spear is based on. Set in the Amazon basin of Ecuador, Beyond the Gates of Splendor is a documentary that tells the story of the Waodani, a violent and isolated tribe, and five North American families who contacted them. All five of the North American men were killed (Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Ed McCully). Elisabeth Elliot, the wife of one of the men, and Rachel Saint, the sister of another, went to live with the Waodani. Later, Steve Saint, the son of one of the slain men moved his family from Florida to live with the same Waodani family that had killed his father. It is the true story of unconditional love and forgiveness lived out that changed the Waodani forever.
